Sweat’s Tobi Pearce imparted an important lesson in response to the Financial Review’s Michael Bailey’s question on his advice to people thinking about striking out on their own as an entrepreneur.
“The first question, is just why? Why do you want to do this? Is it because you want to be cool, and have the status that goes with being an entrepreneur, to meet celebrities?” he asked the crowd.
If it’s the dangling carrot of money that you’re after, that’s not going to be enough to keep you going when you have to get up early and stay up late to run your business, Pearce says. Instead, you need a deeper sense of drive.
“Material motivation doesn’t last,” he said.
