Australia’s emissions reduction policy has not changed since Turnbull’s demise. The NEG has been dumped but the emissions reduction target that the NEG would have set for the energy sector will be reached anyway, early next decade. Everything else the government is doing was also going to be done under Turnbull.
Abbott’s motivation can only be panic about losing his seat to Zali Steggall who showed herself on Friday to be both articulate and a person of conviction.
Abbott’s latest antic is a microcosm of the government at large which is trying to patch holes everywhere, be it on climate, female representation or whatever, as it tries to shore up its vote after lurching so far to the right.
Try as Morrison might, the transactional cost of 2018 continues. The Nats want to have a leadership brawl in budget week and Turnbull said those who tore him down did so because he might have won.
This is not without substance. Anyone who thought Peter Dutton should be prime minister was not out to win the election. It was about wresting back the ideological soul of the Liberal Party.
